The San Rafael Swell is a vast area north of Moab named for a sinuous uplift of sandstone that appears like a wave of rock rearing from the desert floor. The Canyons of the Swell are characterized by tapering slots that form potholes and tanks with a tendency to hold water. Routes in the Swell almost always involve navigating short stretches of clear water, making these ideal choices for hot summer days.
The Robber's Roost is one of the most remote regions in the lower 48 states, traveling through the vast open desert of the Roost belies the deep canyons that can appear suddenly like a rift in the earth. This was the perfect place for outlaws to hide out and Butch Cassidy and the infamous Wild Bunch was known to haunt the area, holed up waiting for the heat of the law to cool down. The canyons of the Roost are unsurpassed in beauty, whimsically sculpted chambers such as Blue John Canyon are archetypes of slot canyons.
